HSR training for staff
Note: If requested, an institute, school, directorate or centre, must release a Health and Safety Representative (HSR) from normal duties, with pay, to attend:
- a five-day HSR initial OHS training course (once elected); and
- a one-day HSR refresher, at least annually, in each year they hold office after completing the initial training.
Training costs are covered by the relevant area.

HSR initial OHS training
This course equips HSRs with an understanding of their role under the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act 2004, including:
- the objectives of the OHS Act 2004
- the legislative framework and how it relates to HSRs
- key parties and their legislative obligations and duties
- establishing representation in the workplace
- participating in consultation and issue resolution
- representing Designated Work Group (DWG) members in OHS risk management processes
- issuing a Provisional Improvement Notice (PIN) and directing the cessation of work.
HSR refresher OHS training
This one-day refresher course provides an opportunity to:
- revisit key elements of the initial training
- receive updates on current OHS issues via the WorkSafe website.
