Expectations

Staff who enrol in a first aid course and have their fees paid for by the University are expected to nominate and act as a University First Aider.

What does a University First Aider do?

The role of a University First Aider is outlined in the Health and Safety Operations Manual, under First Aid Services. Key responsibilities include:

  • complying with the relevant provisions of the Incident and Emergency Management Framework;
  • reporting to their Executive Dean/Director—or to the Head, Health, Safety and Wellbeing—any condition that may prevent them from performing their first aider duties properly and safely;
  • attending the training sessions organised for the maintenance and development of their first aid skills;
  • regularly (e.g. monthly) checking the contents and condition of first aid kits in their area and ordering first aid stocks as required, using the First Aid Order Form;
  • entering into a Hepatitis B prevention program which may, after proper information and consent, include vaccination; and
  • providing documentary evidence of their first aid qualifications upon request.

How to become a certified University First Aider?

Staff seeking first aid certification will enrol with an approved external training provider. Course fees should be covered by the local area if the course is required for nominated first aiders, or with agreement from people leaders.

Approved external providers

To become certified as a First Aider, staff will enrol with an external provider.  Course fees must be covered by the local are where the course is required for nominated first aiders, or where People Leaders agree.

University-recognised first aid courses include
  • Provide First Aid - HLTAID011
    One day, face-to-face, with pre-work required
    Certificate valid for three years as long as annual CPR updates are completed.
  • Perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) - HLTAID009
    Three hours — must be completed annually to ensure the First Aid Certificate remains valid.
  • First Aid Refresher (1 day)
    Prerequisites: a current first aid qualification obtained within the last three years, plus a current CPR update attained within the last 12 months.
  • Mental health first aid
    Blended delivery, or two days face-to-face
