Tell us about your current role

I am currently a Student Experience Officer for the SMB and Camp Street campuses at Federation University Australia. I look after all the student activities and events and supervise all the student clubs that on these campuses. I started the position late January this year.

What are some of your career highlights?

The strongest memories of my time at university are my amazing and dedicated teachers in the sports management program. They really cared about how you went in the course, inspired you and encouraged you to do more than just what was required in the subject outlines. My favourite memory was being part of the UB Uni Games Teams as part of the Southern University Games and the Australian University Games that were held in a different city each year. I loved the social side of being a part of this group of people that competed. I met some of my best friends through being a part of the team. I still tell everyone who is a Uni student to be a part of Uni Games as it is up there with the best experiences of my life!

Describe the most enjoyable and challenging aspects of your job

I love when activities and events organised by myself and student clubs are successful and students enjoy themselves in the process of organising and attending the events. The most challenging part of my job is adapting to the extremely different cohorts of students on each campus and working out their motivations and choosing the right methods to enhance their leadership skills.

Do you have any advice about life after study to pass on to current students?

My advice to other students for life after study is ‘get involved’. Whatever is happening in your workplace make an effort to put you hand up to join that committee, go to the social drinks, the birthday morning teas and personal development sessions. Networking is very important with a workplace and the examples I have just mentioned are great opportunities to build relationships with people.Having these relationships builds support in your workplace and makes your work much more enjoyable!
