Use your chosen name

Update your chosen name across key university systems and make sure you're addressed correctly while studying at Federation.

Your chosen name may be different to what's on your legal documents for a range of reasons including identity, safety and cultural reasons. We’re committed to creating a safe and inclusive environment where you can present as your authentic self.

Updating your chosen name

A chosen name (or preferred name) is the name you want to be called that is different from your legal first name or family name.

We can help you update your chosen first name and last name across key university systems. To get started, fill out the Update your chosen name form (PDF 128 KB) and email it to equity@federation.edu.au. The Student Equity and Safer Communities team will guide you through the process and keep you updated.

If you are updating your gender without changing your chosen name, fill out the Amend your Personal Details form (PDF 399 KB) instead and submit it via our online enquiries portal.

Your chosen name can appear on your student ID card, student email address, Moodle display name, Teams display name and FdL.

Due to legislative requirements, your legal name will remain on official documents like your enrolment confirmation, academic transcript, invoices and your graduation certificate (testamur).

You can update your chosen name to appear on your student ID card and there will be no cost for the replacement.

Updating your legal name

The name used for your enrolment will be the one that appears on your testamur (graduation certificate). If your legal name has changed since you enrolled, you can fill out the Amend your Personal Details form (PDF 399 KB) and submit it via our online enquiries portal.

If your legal name has changed after graduation, you can request a replacement testamur.
