Describe the most enjoyable and challenging aspects of your job
My job is to entertain and make people happy and that’s pretty wonderful. But some aspects of my work include challenging audience’s minds. Presenting thoughts and provoking discussions in order to change the world for the better. The world isn’t in particularly great shape at the moment and I believe it’s an artist’s job to challenge the way that we see the world. This can be difficult presenting to a society that doesn’t feel like it needs to change.
What are your strongest memories while you were studying at Federation University Australia?
The Arts Academy has a wonderful sense of community because it’s an experience like no other. It’s an emotionally exhausting, soul enriching adventure that has brought me lifelong friendships. Fellow students who share similar interests that encourage and inspire you to be the best performer that you can. Whilst working with numerous industry professionals who provide insight into what a performing arts career is like.
Do you have any advice about life after study to pass on to current students?
See live theatre, support the arts (especially local), read books, read plays, watch films, get inspired! It’s bloody difficult to have a successful career in the performing arts, but if you do the work, success will come. Never stop learning. Surround yourself with inspiring people and don’t compare yourself to anyone. Be sure that you have a hobby that will distract you from the tough times.
In one sentence what words of wisdom would you pass on to students
This career is 80% hard work, 10% luck and 10% talent. If you work your butt off, success will follow. Be sure to squeeze in a little bit of fun…because if you’re not enjoying it, why do it?
