Ballarat students celebrate graduations

Posted: Tuesday 3 October 2023

More than 450 Federation University Australia university and TAFE students will celebrate their achievements at three graduation ceremonies in Ballarat this week.

They will be among more than 650 graduates across the University’s campuses to mark the academic milestone in front of family, friends and classmates in October.

Among them will be Master of Social Work (Qualifying) student Fiona Robson, who will deliver a graduate address.

Fiona’s passion for student wellbeing led her to study a Master’s degree and she hopes to put her knowledge into practice in a school mental health practitioner role.

“I feel a real sense of accomplishment and have learnt a lot and know myself better,” Fiona said.

“I feel more employable and am continuing to do what I can to support others and my community.”

The privilege of education will be a focus of Fiona’s graduation address to her peers.

“Just as our communities influence us, we influence our communities,” she explained.

“Although many of us feel stressed and it can feel like people are more divided, being curious about others as well as our own beliefs and opinions can help bring more understanding, connection and care.”

As part of Ballarat’s ceremony on Tuesday, 3 October, Professor Erica Smith will be awarded the title of Emeritus Professor.

Professor Smith joined Federation’s predecessor institution, the University of Ballarat in 2008 and most recently served as Professor of Vocational Education and Training, making a significant contribution to research and policy development in the VET sector. She retired from the University in May 2023.

The honour is awarded by the University Council to a former Professor of the University who has shown distinguished service through scholarly excellence or academic distinction.

Graduation ceremonies will be held at Civic Hall, Ballarat, on Tuesday 3 and Wednesday 4 October with the events also livestreamed.

Quote attributable to Federation University Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Duncan Bentley
“Graduations are a special time for the University and our students can take immense pride in all they have achieved.”

“They are graduating with the skills and knowledge employers need and we cannot wait to watch them carry on Federation’s purpose of transforming lives and enhancing their communities.”
