About our students

Students requiring the Foundation scholarships are identified either by their secondary school before or during the enrolment process, or later in their tertiary studies when remaining at University becomes a challenge:

  • 80% of our students are first-generation university students (the first member of their family to attend university)
  • 75% come from regional and rural areas with many having experienced first-hand the type of adversity commonly experienced in regional Australia
  • 75% of our students come from one or more of the equity groups such as non-English speaking background, have a disability, identify as Indigenous, or are from a low socio-economic background
  • Many of those who leave home to come to the University are leaving home for the first time
  • Federation University graduates almost always return and work in regional Australia, contributing to their own regional communities.

"The scholarship provided vital financial support so that I don't have to work part time, and I can focus on study, pay for placement and be an active part of my child's life." Sarah

Message from our Chancellor

"Please join me as a member of the Chancellor's Circle by contributing funds to enable Federation University, Victoria’s premier regional university, to transform lives and enhance communities.

The Chancellor's Circle is a dedicated fund within the Federation University Australia Foundation. Grants and awards made possible from the Chancellor's Circle are at the Vice-Chancellor's discretion and are used to support valuable initiatives for which other university funds are scarce or unavailable. These initiatives will be in pursuit of Federation University’s Strategic Plan 2021-2025 which outlines our commitment to providing integrated lifelong learning, skills and impactful research enabling people and communities to prosper locally, regionally and globally.

Federation University is deeply embedded within our regional communities and has established transformative partnerships with industry, government and community. Our research is focused on driving innovation and increased industry productivity across the economy by generating new ideas and technologies.

As the number one university in Australia for first-in-family students, Federation University is committed to delivering a personalised, supportive learner experience leading to high value employment. We are partnering with employers and industry to offer co-created learning in workplaces, providing immersive professional learning opportunities for our students and helping to meet skills shortages in the regions we serve.

Your contribution through the Chancellor’s Circle will support these strategic objectives – creating invaluable opportunities for students and delivering impactful research and infrastructure developments for our regions. For example, your grant may fund a higher degree by research (HDR) scholarship, providing direct support to a student and indirectly benefitting local industry and community through the creation of new discoveries and knowledge. Funds may be used to provide opportunities that would not otherwise be available to our talented students, for example, to enable a group of students from the Arts Academy to travel to be part of a festival or other artistic event.

Individuals and corporations who have a history of philanthropy and who share a vision of Federation University are among those who have pledged their support. Donors receive an annual report outlining the progress of the fund, grants made during the year and strategic updates from the university.

Our staff at the Foundation Office would be delighted to speak with you if you are interested in joining the Chancellor's Circle."

Terry Moran AC, FIPAA
