Governance

Since the establishment of the School of Mines Ballarat (SMB) in 1870, Federation University Australia has emerged in multiple forms, and under multiple names. The University’s commitment to educational and social equity, teaching excellence, research distinction, environmental sustainability and regional capacity building has enabled it to develop in a way that draws on its proud heritage to inform its future.

The University is governed by:

  • Council: the formally constituted governing body that oversees and is accountable for all of the University's operations.
  • Vice-Chancellor and President: the CEO who manages the day-to-day business of the University.
  • Academic Board: the body established to assure the quality of the University's teaching, learning and research.

Council

Federation University Australia is regulated by the Federation University Australia Act 2010 and governed by its Council, chaired by the Chancellor and advised by its standing committees including the Academic Board.

Vice-Chancellor and President

Appointed by the University Council as prescribed by the Act, the Vice-Chancellor and President is responsible for the conduct of the University's affairs in all matters and has the powers necessary to perform the functions and discharge the duties of the office.

Academic Board

In accordance with the Federation University Australia Statute 2021, the objective of the Academic Board is to establish and maintain academic leadership at an institutional level. As the peak academic governing body of the University, the Academic Board oversees the University’s academic governance system consistent with the requirements of the Higher Education Standards Framework (Threshold Standards) 2021 and other regulatory standards.
