Ballarat students celebrate graduation milestone

Posted: Tuesday 28 March 2023

More than 900 Federation University Australia students will celebrate their graduation at ceremonies in Ballarat this week.

The students are among more than 1400 across the University’s campuses to mark the education milestone in front of family, friends and their classmates in March.

Among them is University Medallist Edward Petrie who completed a Bachelor of Commerce, achieving a GPA of 7.000.

An interest in business and management whilst working as a diesel mechanic drew Edward to pursue his studies, where he excelled with consistent High Distinction grades, despite undergoing major spinal surgery twice.

“I had a lot of help from the academic staff and there were teachers who helped by holding other classes for me online when I couldn’t attend,” Edward said.

Edward took on an important mentoring role to his fellow students and has maintained a commitment to charity and philanthropy throughout his studies, supporting various charities.

He said he was proud to be receiving the University Medal and is now employed at local accounting firm Chris Packer and Associates.

Federation TAFE student Martina Albin will receive the Vice-Chancellor's award for Excellence at her graduation ceremony.

The Diploma of Nursing graduate was inspired to change her career from retail to nursing after a family member passed away from a long illness.

During her studies, Martina advocated for change in the Nursing course on behalf of her fellow students and took on additional work in the healthcare industry to expand her knowledge of nursing.

This paid off, with Martina securing a role at St John of God Hospital’s oncology unit after her final placement was completed.

Martina is continuing her commitment to healthcare industry, having just enrolled in the Bachelor of Nursing at Federation University.

“I am honoured to receive this award which would not have been possible without the support of my lecturers, friends and family. The course has changed my life for the better and I am more determined than ever to complete the Bachelor of Nursing and expand my career opportunities in oncology,” said Martina.
