Care packs to help Year 12 students look beyond the pandemic

Posted: Monday 4 October 2021

To mark the first day of Term 4 today, thousands of year 12 students across Ballarat, Berwick, Gippsland and the Wimmera will begin receiving care packages to help them get through their final school term and ease their path to university.

Current Year 12 students have competed their entire two years of VCE in the COVID-19 pandemic with long periods studying from home, which has made it difficult for some students to look beyond the pandemic and consider post-secondary school study.

Recognising the challenges these students have faced, Federation University has developed Year 12 Support Packages to help local secondary school students through these challenging times.

The Year 12 Support Package includes information about university courses and support for students, as well food vouchers to fuel themselves with a local meal as they prepare for their exams.

About 3,000 packs will be available to Year 12 students via their school career advisors.

The packs are part of a suite of measures introduced by Federation University to help take the pressure off secondary students who are struggling during the global pandemic, including the new early offer program which allows Year 12 students to secure a place at Federation before they sit their exams.

As the number one rated university in Victoria for undergraduate student support, according to the Good Universities Guide 2022, Federation’s range of student support measures include:

FED Success package for regional year 12 students impacted by COVID-19 featuring a student grant of $100 for 2022.

TAFE to Higher Education pathway combined programs where students receive an offer to both the TAFE and higher education programs. These hybrid programs combine practical TAFE skills training with the critical thinking and analysis skills of a university degree.

More than $5 million in total scholarships to help students realise their dreams.

Early Offer Program where year 12 students can apply for an early conditional offer for a place in their chosen course.

Forms to register for the care package will be sent to VCE students at schools in Gippsland, Ballarat and Berwick.

Quotes attributable to Federation University Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Duncan Bentley

“We know how tough it’s been for senior high-school students who have spent most of their VCE studying during a global pandemic.”

“We hope these care packages can go some way to helping students as they study for exams and prepare for their post-secondary future.”
