TAFE students take new skills for a test drive

Posted: Wednesday 18 December 2019

Motor mechanic students on exchange from China will test drive their new skills this week as they commence work placement at some of Ballarat’s most prestigious car dealerships.

Federation TAFE has teamed up with Ballarat Mercedes-Benz, Eclipse Ford and Ballarat Holden to host 12 students in the service departments, enabling the students to gain valuable industry experience.

The students are visiting from Wuyi Senior Technical College in Chongqing, China. They arrived in Ballarat in March to undertake placement at three different employers. This new placement marks the final stage of their 12 month exchange in Australia.

This is the third year Federation TAFE has hosted students from the College, and it’s proving to be a very popular exchange program.

Federation TAFE Executive Director Barry Wright visited Wuyi Senior Technical College earlier this year to further strengthen the arrangement between the two institutions.

When this placement concludes in March, 2020, the students will be presented with their Certificate II in Automotive Servicing Technology at a graduation ceremony at the SMB campus.

Quotes attributable to Federation TAFE Executive Director, Barry Wright:

“Gaining industry experience is an important aspect of a TAFE education. Students learn firsthand what it’s like to be part of the workforce, and can apply their new skills to real world situations.”

“This program is a great example of the industry arrangements Federation TAFE has with local businesses and with institutions around the world.”

“We’re very pleased to be hosting these students over the next three months and hope they find their time in Ballarat educational and enjoyable.”
