STATEMENT FROM FEDERATION UNIVERSITY AUSTRALIA

“Federation University Australia strongly supports the academic freedom and free speech of all our academic staff to speak on matters relating to their academic expertise.

“More broadly, Federation believes that for democracy to succeed people must be allowed to express facts and opinions in a respectful way and in a safe and respectful environment.

“This position is consistent with Federation’s Living Values of Inclusion, Innovation, Excellence, Empowerment, and Collaboration.

“Federation is extremely disappointed that our Deputy Vice-Chancellor Reconciliation, Professor Andrew Gunstone, was booed and heckled and prevented by the organisers from completing a recent Australia Day invited keynote address on truth telling and reconciliation.

“Professor Gunstone is a leading international authority on reconciliation, truth, and justice, and regularly provides expert advice to industry, governments, and academia on these matters.”

“Federation will continue to publicly advocate and support matters that align with our core purpose of transforming lives and enhancing communities.”
