Outer city living a drawcard for international students

Posted: Monday 17 June 2024

Moving to a new country can be daunting, but one Federation University student has found the experience to be life-changing, after moving to Berwick to study and falling in love with life in a regional city.

Berwick campus resident, Janya Jayanetti, is an international student from Sri Lanka and says she chose to live on campus as it’s very convenient living so close to the university.

Janya chose to study with Federation because of the proximity to relatives, as well as hearing about the excellent student support reputation.

“I received a scholarship for my first year living at Fedliving and that too influenced my decision. I don’t have any relatives or friends living close by so living on campus grounds seemed to be the best and most effective option”

Janya loves living in Berwick, citing the peaceful smaller population and the convenience of being able to walk to shops as drawcards for her.

Janya says there are many benefits to living on campus while she undertakes her study as a nursing student.

“It is convenient being close especially since I don’t drive, and there are also a few shops within walking distance to get groceries. The Berwick station is also nearby so it is very easy to travel.”

Associate Director of Commercial Services, Melanie Coffey says choosing where to live during university study can significantly impact your experience.

“For many students, particularly international students, living on-campus is a great option, especially for your first year” she said.

“Residential living enhances the university experience and allows students to make the most of the opportunities available to them.”

Residential student surveys have revealed that some of the most valued aspects of living on-campus include proximity to classrooms, meeting new people, making friends as well as adjusting to university life.

Federation University currently has capacity for additional international students at its campuses in Ballarat, Berwick and Gippsland.
