The Murnong SEED Citizen Science Project

Murnong has long been recognised as one of the most important food sources for Aboriginal people of south eastern Australia. However, since the introduction of sheep and rabbits Murnong has become scarce, persisting only in isolated, undisturbed grassland and forest remnants.

Federation University scientists are seeking the help of volunteer 'Murnong Gardeners' as we investigate the Murnong story around Ballarat. With the assistance of citizen scientists and gardeners the project aims to explore the growth form and distribution of the two local species – Microseris walteri and Microseris scapigera; analyse their nutritional and medicinal value and build up stocks for education and revegetation projects.
