Alumni achievements celebrated at awards

Posted: Wednesday 1 December 2021

From the spotlight of London’s Royal Albert Hall, to Gippsland boardrooms and art galleries, Federation University Australia’s distinguished alumni are excelling in their chosen fields and beyond.

Four Gippsland leaders in art, theatre, business, and science are among the 11 people to be honoured in Federation University’s 2021 Alumni Awards.

The awards formally recognise the achievements of distinguished alumni of Federation University and its predecessor institutions, with awards presented at a virtual ceremony yesterday.

This year, the University launched a new Award for Community Service, which was presented to Ian Gibson, who has a long history with the Gippsland campus, beginning with his first degree, a Bachelor of Economics in 1969, followed by a Bachelor of Arts in 1973 and a Master of Public Policy and Management in 2003.

He is a valued ambassador for both the University and higher education in Gippsland, helping to link community, government, and industry.

The Gippsland recipients of the Federation University 2021 Alumni Awards are:

Ronald Edwards-Pepper - Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Alumnus of the Year

Jaz Flowers - Alumna of the Year

Ian Andrew Gibson - Award for Community Service

Neil Terrill - Distinguished Alumnus

The annual Alumni Awards celebrate the recipients’ successes not only in their chosen fields of study, but their lives more broadly.

Quotes attributable to Federation University Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Duncan Bentley

“Our alumni are part of the fabric of Federation University, and I am so pleased to congratulate this year’s award recipients.”

“It is fantastic to celebrate our alumni’s achievements, not only on the local, national and international stage, but in the case of each Gippsland recipient, the work they have done locally to support prosperity in their own communities, sharing their expertise and passing their craft onto the next generation.”
