All-inclusive new FedPride strategy launched

Posted: Wednesday 18 November 2020

Federation University today launched FedPride 2021-2024 – a comprehensive strategy aimed at best practice for LGBTIQ+ inclusion across every area of university life.

Launched during Transgender Awareness Week, FedPride is an intersectional strategy to ensure the rights and inclusion of gender and sexuality diverse people are held as core to every impact area across the university.

FedPride is a three-year plan that cements the university’s strong commitment to diversity and inclusion. During Transgender Awareness Week, the university re-affirms its stance against discrimination and harassment and stands in solidarity with the entire LGBTIQ+ community.

The FedPride 2021 – 2024 Strategy can be viewed on the Federation University website.

Actions within the strategy will be benchmarked against the Australian Workplace Equality Index, with Federation University aiming for the highest level, a Gold Award under the index by the end of year three.

  • The Strategy has been created under the leadership of the FedPride Steering Group – comprising gender and sexuality diverse staff and students, and is supported by an Implementation Group of leaders from across the university
  • It aims to remove discrimination, bullying and unconscious bias through targeted staff and student training and awareness activities, to make sure that Fed is a safe space where everyone can belong
  • It ensures that gender and sexuality-diverse staff and students see themselves reflected across the university – in advocacy materials across our campuses, policy, events, public forums, marketing and internal communications.

Federation University acknowledges that diversity – having access to and embracing differences in backgrounds, perspectives, knowledge and skills, brings to its campuses, a consciousness that supports innovation and the highest quality of thinking.

Quotes attributable to Federation University Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Duncan Bentley

“It is critically important for Federation University to embed diversity and inclusion into every area of university life, including the way we teach, and in our research. Diversity supports innovation and enriches us as individuals and as a community.”

“The FedPride strategy aims to create an environment where staff and students can be who they are and live to the fullest extent of themselves. When we feel safe, included and celebrated, we contribute freely and with enthusiasm and bring the best of ourselves to our work and study.”
