Regional living a drawcard for international students

Posted: Monday 17 June 2024

Moving to a new country can be daunting, but one Federation University student has found the experience to be life-changing, after moving to Ballarat to study and falling in love with life in a regional city.

Mt Helen campus resident, Karthy Sivendran, is an international student from Sri Lanka and says finding a safe place to live was key.

“While researching I stumbled upon the option to stay on campus, this fits my criteria perfectly of a secure place to reside while being close to uni,” she said.

Karthy says there are many benefits to living on campus while she undertakes her study as an Early Childhood Educator.

“Living on campus means I can be punctual for my classes and quick access to library resources, a 24-hour study space, a fully functional cafeteria all in one compound. However, in my opinion being surrounded by lush greenery would top the list of benefits.”

“As an international student moving away from home was a huge step yet living in a space that provides the necessary amenities has helped make the move more seamless creating a positive impact on my student life.”

Karthy said that the lush greenery around the Mt Helen campus, while not being too far from the city provides the best of both worlds. She had previously visited Ballarat before moving to study and as a nature lover preferred the quiet vibe instead of a busy city, but also noted that the art gallery was her favourite spot during her time off.

Associate Director of Commercial Services, Melanie Coffey says choosing where to live during university study can significantly impact your experience.

“For many students, particularly international students, living on-campus is a great option, especially for your first year” she said.

“Residential living enhances the university experience and allows students to make the most of the opportunities available to them.”

Residential student surveys have revealed that some of the most valued aspects of living on-campus include proximity to classrooms, meeting new people, making friends as well as adjusting to university life.

Federation University currently has capacity for additional international students at its campuses in Ballarat, Berwick and Gippsland.
