Major ARC grant awarded to FedUni academic

Federation University Australia’s Dr Julien Ugon has received a prestigious Australian Research Council grant to further his mathematical research into optimisation techniques.

“The University is delighted to congratulate Dr Ugon on achieving this well-deserved research grant,” Professor Leigh Sullivan, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation), said.

“His research work is another example of the very strong mathematical research that has been one of FedUni’s strengths over many years.”

Dr Julien Ugon, Senior Lecturer at the University’s Centre for Informatics and Applied Optimization (CIAO), will work with partner organisations from Spain, France and Israel, as well as collaborate with Swinburne and RMIT universities.

The grant will total up to $362,045 and run from 2018 to 2020. The full title of the project is ‘An optimisation-based framework for non-classical Chebyshev approximation’.

Optimisation is a mathematical technique for finding a maximum or minimum value of a function of several variables subject to a set of constraints.

“Through an innovative combination of optimisation and algebraic technique, this project intends to develop foundations for new results in approximation theory, and new insights into other areas of mathematics, notably optimisation,” Dr Ugon said.

“The techniques and methods developed should also have significant benefits in the many disciplines where approximation problems appear, such as engineering, physics, nuclear science or data mining.”

The funding is provided by the Australian Government through the Australian Research Council’s Discovery Program – DP18 scheme.
