New project tackles social isolation among elderly in Latrobe City

Posted: Monday 5 December 2016

Professor Philip Taylor of Federation University Australia has joined the Project Reference Group established by the Commissioner for Senior Victorians to guide the implementation of the Strengthening Seniors’ Inclusion and Participation in Local Communities (SSIP) project.

The project builds on a recent report Ageing is everyone’s business: a report on social isolation and loneliness among senior Victorians.

“The SSIP project will address social isolation and loneliness of older people in seven areas of Victoria including Latrobe City by building the capacity of local community-based organisations to better respond to the needs of older people,” Professor Taylor said.

“In each location one-off funding of $80,000 is being made available to enhance the age-friendliness; of organisations while improving older people’s participation opportunities.”

In addition the funding will provide opportunities to develop and utilise community resources and engagement tools to improve organisational governance and sustainability.
