Research interests
Modelling human behaviour: With a background in Cognitive Science (MSc distinction) and Artificial Intelligence (PhD), my main research has focused on modelling human behaviour, developing an understanding of the value of different sources of data, and the aspects of behaviour and personality that they can reveal. In 1996 I wrote an innovative computer game for indirectly determining a users’ personality. My current research is in the areas of Health/Sport Informatics, Crime Informatics, and sensor-based solutions for SMART cities.
Short biography
Dr Giles Oatley received his PhD in Artificial Intelligence in 2000, and his highest position in the UK was Reader (Associate Professor) in Intelligent Systems at Cardiff Metropolitan University, before continuing his academic career in Australia since 2016. Giles’ interests in modelling human behaviour crosscut learning and teaching, consultancy/enterprise, and research. Recent health informatics work includes collaboration with engineering and nursing colleagues to develop smart textiles for people with dementia, for quality of life and non-invasive assessment of cognitive abilities.
For over 20 years Giles has researched in data mining with particular emphasis on aberrant behaviour, the resultant analyses often embedded in decision support systems. Research in this area has been published several journal articles and conference papers including the journals Artificial Intelligence and Law, Knowledge Based Systems, Expert Systems with Applications, and International Journal of Police Science and Management. Giles has submitted several UK EPSRC and EU (FP6) bids as principal investigator in this area. The police forces and crime and disorder partnerships he has worked with include:
- Western Australia Police (ongoing; GPS semantic trajectory and spatiotemporal analysis)
- City of London Police (consultant with Fraud Review Team - National Fraud Intelligence Bureau)
- Cleveland Police (prediction of repeat victimisation)
- Northumbria Police (information extraction and text analysis)
- West Midlands Police (classification and prediction of burglary networks)
- Greater Manchester Police (gun crime and gang networks)
- North East Retail Crime Partnership (retail crime networks)
Giles was a member of the “Innovation Panel” for Western Australia Police (WAPol) for “Evidence-based policing” (EBP). He designed a unique undergraduate degree for analysis of crime data in 2007, and most recently co-designed a Crime Science course at Murdoch University. Giles is a Fellow and Chartered IT Professional with the BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, and Charted Professional with the ACS (Australian Computing Society).
Giles’ publications have been cited regularly, with ~800 citations and an h-index of 14 and i10-index of 17 (Google Scholar). He has 10 PhD completions.
