Short biography

Shyh Wei Teng is a professor in the Institute of Institute of Innovation, Science and Sustainability (IISS) at Federation University Australia. He currently serves as the Deputy Dean of the Institute (2024 -). Prior to the current role, he served in various senior leadership roles, e.g. Director of Academic Operations of IISS (2022 – 2024), Deputy Dean of School of Engineering, Information Technology (IT) and Physical Sciences (2018 – 2022), Deputy Head of School of Engineering and IT (2014 – 2018) - both at Federation University, and Director of Undergraduate Studies of Gippsland School of IT at Monash University (2010 – 2013).

Professor Teng obtained his PhD in Computing from Monash University, Australia. His research focus is in the area of Multimodal Data Analytics and Machine Learning. He has published over 120 research papers – many in high-quality journals in his research areas. He has been successful in Australian and international competitive research grants, including the Discovery Projects grant scheme by the Australian Research Council. His successful competitive grants in research and education total over A$9.5M to date. He also has strong international profile, including collaborations in various countries. E.g. in China, he serves as an Honorary Professor for Shaanxi province’s Forensics Science research centre and also collaborates with the Academy of National Food and Strategic Reserves Administration, Jiangsu University and Xi’an University of Science and Technology.

Professor Teng is also active in serving the community. E.g. he has served or is serving various committees as adviser on developing smart city in City of Casey and City of Ararat Councils. He was also the selected member in the Quantum Technology Network for the State of Victoria. Professor Teng was the recipient of awards, including Federation University Vice Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence in Industry Engagement and Impact (2022), and in Enhancing the Student Experience (2021), High Commendation Award in Federation University 2019 Deans Awards for Excellence in Graduate Research Supervision, and 2007 Monash University’s Staff Excellence Award in Teaching.
