Biography

Dr Savin Chand is an Associate Professor, Applied Mathematics and Statistics in the Institute of Innovation, Science and Sustainability at Federation University.

Savin’s primary research focus is on severe weather events and climate extremes. He is also internationally recognised as an expert on tropical cyclones and climate change, and made several important contributions in the field. Savin was accoladed with a number of recognitions for his research, including the Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Research Excellence in 2017 and 2022.

Prior to joining Federation University Australia, Savin was a Research Scientist at the Australian Bureau of Meteorology where he worked in a number of research projects on climate extremes.

Awards

  • Uwe Radok Award 2011 - The Australian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society Award for the best PhD thesis in Australia in the fields of meteorology, oceanography, glaciology or climatology.
  • Research Excellence Award 2010 - The University of Melbourne's Faculty of Science Award, formally known as the John and Allan Gilmour Research Award, given in recognition of the outstanding achievements in scientific research.
