Short biography

Manzur Murshed received a B.Sc. Engineering (Hons) degree in computer science and engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), Dhaka in 1994 and a PhD degree in computer science from the Australian National University (ANU), Canberra in 1999. He also completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Graduate Teaching from ANU in 1997. Currently, he is a Professor of Information Technology and the Associate Dean Research at the Institute of Innovation, Science and Sustainability. Previously, he served Federation University as a RHT Smith Professor and Personal Chair in Information Technology from 2014 to 2018 and Monash University as the Head of Gippsland School of Information Technology from 2007 to 2013. His research interests include Image/video processing; Machine learning; Big Data analytics; Computational mathematics; Wireless communications; Distributed & Cloud computing; and Security & privacy. He has so far published 240+ refereed research papers with >5,100 citations (Google Scholar) and h-index 25 & i10-index 76. He has received $5.4m competitive research funding, including seven grants from the Australian Government — four Discovery Projects (DP) grants and a Linkage Infrastructure, Equipment, and Facilities (LIEF) grant from the Australian Research Council (ARC), an Education Integration Project (EIP) grant from the Australian General Practice Training (AGPT), and a Traceability Grants Program (TGP) grant from the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment (DAWE). He has recently been appointed to the ARC College of Experts 2020–2022. He has successfully supervised 29 PhD and 3 MPhil students to completion, and he is currently supervising 7 PhD students. He is an Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Multimedia and served as an Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology, two of the top-ranked journals in his fields of research. He guest-edited special issues for IEEE Transactions on Cloud Computing, Elsevier Journal of Future Generation Computer Systems, and Springer Journal of Cluster Computing. He received 2007 Vice-Chancellor’s Knowledge Transfer Award (commendation) from the University of Melbourne, 2006 Early Career Research Excellence Award from the Faculty of Information Technology, Monash University, and 1994 University Gold Medal from BUET.
