Biography

Dr Biruk Tekle is a lecturer in civil engineering within the Institute of Innovation, Science and Sustainability at Federation University Australia. He completed his PhD at UNSW, Australia. His PhD thesis focused on the bond behaviour of glass fibre-reinforced polymers and alkali-activated concrete. After completing his PhD, Biruk worked as a research associate at UNSW and as a lecturer at Melbourne Polytechnic. In 2020 he was awarded the highly prestigious Alexander von Humboldt research fellowship in Germany, where he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Leipzig University of Applied Sciences (HTWK) in Leipzig, Germany. Biruk's research focuses on characterising and exploiting non-traditional cement, concrete and reinforcements. He uses experimental and numerical research to understand the materials' physical, mechanical, and durability properties.
