Knowledge Discovery from Smart City Services: How Smart are Our Cities?

Project outline:

With the rapid progress and ease of deployment of low-cost sensors and communication infrastructures of low-power wide area networks (LPWANs), cities around the world including Australian cities are gearing up to provides smart services to residents. These sensors providing the Internet of Things (IoT) services will continuously stream of huge data. Traditional data mining techniques fail to handle and extract knowledge from this huge amount of high-speed data in a reasonable time. It is a major challenge to develop a suitable mining technique to discover useable knowledge from smart cities, like identifying factors why citizens are dissatisfied with city councils. This project will aim to develop a parallel distributed mining algorithm to mine useful information from the data collected from IoT-based smart city services. This distributed algorithm will run near the data source, such as in sensors or edge devices. It will develop a more compact data structure to store sensor data and finally mine knowledge from the data structure in a distributed nature.
