Free legal service
We offer a free and confidential legal service for students online and at Federation University Campuses.
The service runs on Wednesday afternoons during semester at Mt Helen Campus, if you are at another location, please enquire and we may be able to schedule a phone appointment.
A solicitor from Central Highlands Community Legal Centre (CHCLC) attends these afternoons. Areas addressed include:
- Tenancy; leases, landlords, agents, bonds, etc.
- Consumer complaints
- Credit and debts
- Family law/family violence
- Court summons/summary criminal offences
- If you are a victim of crime
- Neighbourhood disputes
- Discrimination/equal opportunity
- Car accidents
- Centrelink issues
- Employment concerns
- Freedom of Information
- Ombudsman complaints
- Wills/Power of Attorney
Appointment must be pre-booked. The CHCLC will conduct a conflict check prior to confirming an appointment.

What to bring to your appointment
You will need to bring any documentation that is relevant to the purpose for your appointment; this may include contracts, fines, letters from Centrelink, court orders etc.
The small print
We regret that the service will not be able to assist in the following areas:
- Student vs student
- Student vs University
- Student vs University Accommodation Services
- Migration, taxation, accounting or financial advice
A CHCLC solicitor cannot engage in litigation on your behalf. You will receive advice about your problem and a referral if further action is required.
