Indigenous Knowledge in Research: Intellectual Property and ethical use

Posted: Tuesday 29 August 2023

The Library, in collaboration with the National Centre for Reconciliation, Truth and Justice, is proud to present Dr Virginia Marshall (ANU) and Professor Emma Lee in this panel chaired by Andrew Gunstone, Associate Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Reconciliation.

Dr Marshall is a Research Fellow based at the Australian National University's School of Regulation and Global Governance (RegNet). She is a practising lawyer and leading legal scholar with expertise in Aboriginal water rights, native title rights in Sea Country, Indigenous governance and the intersection of Traditional Knowledge systems and western intellectual property regimes, especially as it relates to Indigenous commercialisation of traditional medicines. Dr Emma Lee is a trawlwulwuy woman of tebrakunna country, north-east Tasmania, Australia.  Emma’s work in Tasmania has assisted in constitutional reform, the first joint management plan of a protected area and, in 2022, establishing a market for cultural fisheries. In 2023 she became the first Indigenous woman to be a recipient of a Pew Fellowship for Marine Conservation. Emma was also a finalist for 2022 Australian of the Year (Tasmania) for her body of work in Indigenous rights. In 2021, she became the first Indigenous Australian editor of a Best Practice Guideline for the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN).  In 2019, she was a member of the Federal Government’s National Co-Design Group for Indigenous Voice.

This is a wonderful opportunity to hear from two leading Indigenous Academics with extensive knowledge and experience.

This session will examine issues around IP, ethical use, and ownership of Indigenous Knowledge. Our panellists will speak from their experience of working with First Nations Communities and highlight the considerations of undertaking research involving Indigenous Knowledge.
