Research Collections

The Research Collection holds items by or about Federation University Australia and its predecessor institutions, patents, rare or valuable works, and other important items that are deemed to be too rare or fragile to sit on the open shelves. Some highlights of the collection include works on Central and Western Victoria history, Eureka Stockade, local industrial heritage, and the history and operation of mines and mining in Australia.

Accessing the collection

The Research Collection is located at the Mt Helen and Gippsland Libraries.

Mt. Helen

The Mt Helen Research Collection can be viewed at the Geoffrey Blainey Research Centre (GBRC) during opening hours or by appointment.

Gippsland

The Gippsland Research Collection can be viewed at the Uncle Albert Mullett, GRSC Reading Room during opening hours or by appointment.

Special guidelines

There are special guidelines for the use of items from this collection:

  • Items from the collection cannot be borrowed from the Library
  • Access will be strictly limited to use within the Geoffrey Blainey Research Centre and the Uncle Albert Mullett, GRSC Reading Room
  • Rare and valuable works may be restricted for use under supervision only
  • Photocopying material from the collection is restricted to items published after 1900 which will not be likely to suffer from damage or deteriorate if copied. Please check with staff before photocopying.
