Biography

Jo is a sociologist working in the School of Applied Media and Social Sciences. Jo joined Federation University Australia in 2014 moving in the merger with Monash Gippsland. Previous to Monash, Jo worked at the University of Melbourne where he was a postdoctoral research fellow in the Department of Resource Management and Geography. He is currently a member of the Executive Committee as the Public Relations Officer of The Australian Sociological Association. Jo has previously also been co-editor of the association’s professional newsletter Nexus and has been since 2009. He has also been a co-convener and principle convener of the Australian Cultural Sociology Thematic Group and is a member of the Rural Societies Thematic Group also. Jo has also recently completed co-convening the 50th anniversary conference for The Australian Sociological Association held at Monash Caulfield Campus in November 2013.

Loretta Garvey is a registered nurse and joined Federation University in 2022 as the Assessment Transformation Lead for the university. She is now the Associate Head of Discipline (Nursing) Curriculum and Accreditation. Prior to joining Federation Loretta was involved in the establishment of the Bachelor of Nursing program at Swinburne University, where she utilised her expertise to develop an active learning curriculum in undergraduate nurse education. Previously, Loretta served as the Assessment Coordinator in Nursing and Midwifery at Monash University and taught acute medical surgical nursing. This work aligns with her research focus on innovations in active learning and assessment in higher education. Loretta’s honours research focused on Graduate Nurses' decision making in nurse-initiated medication. Prior to her work in nursing education, Loretta coordinated assessment and problem-based learning for the campus-based years of the Monash Medical Doctorate (MD) which led to her PhD research exploring the readiness of year 1 and 2 MD students to engage in problem-based learning.
