Biography

Christopher Hudson is a Lecturer in the Institute of Education, Arts and Community at Federation University, Australia. Christopher has two main research areas. First, research that focuses on the nexus of school context, school leadership and school success, especially in rural school settings. He uses multiple-perspective, mixed method case study methodology to further develop knowledge on successful rural school leadership. Second, research that focuses on the intersection of social justice and sports pedagogy. He is also author of the book, 'Leading positive classrooms - adopting an educative approach to behaviour management in schools'.

Christopher’s research is backed by his extensive experience as an educator in government schools in Victoria, Australia. As a school leader, Christopher specialised in creating and facilitating community-based personal development programs for young people who were at risk of disengaging from school. His ability to form strong school-community relationships resulted in many young people broadening their skill sets, developing positive relationships in the community, (re)engaging with mainstream education, and building positive conflict resolution skills.

In 2023, Christopher received an ACEL New Voice in Educational Leadership Research Scholarship, which recognises emerging leaders in the field.

Areas of expertise

Christopher is interested in the work of rural teachers and school leaders. His research focuses on (re)defining what success looks like in rural schools and investigates how school leaders influence this success.

(1) Rural school leadership

Christopher’s research contributes to the broad body of literature that addresses the nexus between school leadership, school context and school success, particularly in the context of rural schools.

(2) Sport pedagogy and social justice

Using the work of bell hooks and Freire, Christopher has published academic papers that consider physical education through a critical pedagogy lens. He is interested in exploring how young people experience physical education and the ways in which pedagogy shapes students’ meanings and understanding of their bodies.

(3) Behaviour management

Christopher has a strong interest in behaviour management in schools. In particular, how teachers and school leaders can build and lead positive classroom environments so that students can flourish, both academically and with their wellbeing. In 2024, Christopher published a book through Amba Press titled, “Leading Positive Classrooms: adopting an educative approach to behaviour management in schools”.
