Credit for new students

Applying for credit as early as possible ensures you have an up-to-date student plan when you start your journey with us.

You’re eligible to receive credit if you have previously successfully completed:

  • A course (often called a unit at other universities) with Federation University or another higher education institution
  • Diploma-level or higher studies at an Australian TAFE

In addition, your previous studies must be:

  1. Relevant
  2. Equivalent (at least 80%) to current knowledge and/or practices; and
  3. Satisfy the current learning or competency outcomes of the course/subject

Credit may be granted for up to two thirds of a program (measured in credit points). Additional credit may be granted where internal/external credit transfer agreements exist.

Credit will not be granted for:

  1. Studies with non-passing grades
  2. Studies with credit transfer grades
  3. Studies more than 10 years old (or shorter in disciplines where knowledge changes more rapidly) at the time a complete credit application is submitted.

Domestic students should  apply for credit as soon as possible after receiving an offer.

If you're an international student, we recommend you apply for credit when you submit your application through StudyLink.

It's important that you apply at least two weeks before census date for courses that you would normally be enrolled in for that semester.

Documentation

Credit for previous university studies

If you studied at a university other than Federation University, you must provide the following:

  • Official academic transcript, including a key to your grades
  • Official subject descriptors (PDF format) from the year you completed the subject detailing Synopsis, Subject objectives, Assessments, contact hours, placement hours and details (if applicable).  You can obtain these from your prior institution through their online handbook (ensuring they include the above details) or by contacting them directly.
  • Education students must also provide placement logbooks.

Documents must be in English, or a certificated copy of translation to English.

Credit for previous TAFE studies

If you are seeking credit for previous TAFE studies, you must provide:

  • Certificate of Completion (or a statement of completion on your transcript)
  • Official academic transcript, including a key to your grades
  • Nursing and Midwifery students must provide a copy of current AHPRA registration

You may be requested to provide further documentation to support your application - applications will not be considered complete until all documentation has been provided.

You should enrol as per your Program Structure until you receive your credit outcome.

Credit assessment may take up to 10 business days (this may be longer during the peak period of December-March).

If credit transfer is approved, you will receive a personalised student plan that shows your enrolment and progression, and a credit outcome letter. Your credit will be recorded on your academic transcript with a TC grade.

You can also view your credit in my Student Centre.

Applications within two weeks of census date

Credit transfer applications submitted within two weeks of census date may result in academic and financial penalty if credit is granted for a subject enrolled in that semester. In this instance, you will be contacted to discuss your options

Appealing a credit transfer outcome

If you believe you have grounds to appeal, you may do so as per the Student Appeal Procedure.

You must submit your appeal within 30 days of being notified of the outcome. As this process can take several weeks, we recommend you stay enrolled in your course(s) and complete all coursework until you know the outcome of your appeal.

Receiving credit for previous studies may affect the following:

Centrelink

The granting of credit could affect your study load and therefore eligibility for Centrelink payments. Centrelink must be advised of any changes in study load.

Visas

International students should be aware that the granting of credit could affect your duration of studies. The university is obliged to notify Immigration if the duration of your studies is reduced due to the granting of credits.

Accreditation

Students need to check with accreditation bodies such as CPA and ACS that your accreditation is not put at risk by the granting of credit.
