Credit for continuing students

You can apply for credit for previous studies at any point in your program but we recommend you do so as early as possible. If you are planning cross-institutional or overseas study and you want it to count towards your program, you must arrange this in advance.

Credit for previous studies

We recommend applying for credit for previous studies as early into your program as possible, so you have an up-to-date student plan.

You’re eligible to receive credit if you have previously successfully completed:

  • A course (often called a unit at other universities) with Federation University or another higher education institution
  • Diploma-level or higher studies at an Australian TAFE

In addition, your previous studies must be:

  1. Relevant
  2. Equivalent (at least 80%) to current knowledge and/or practices; and
  3. Satisfy the current learning or competency outcomes of the course/subject

Credit may be granted for up to two thirds of a program (measured in credit points). Additional credit may be granted where internal/external credit transfer agreements exist.

Credit will not be granted for:

  1. Studies with non-passing grades
  2. Studies with credit transfer grades
  3. Studies more than 10 years old (or shorter in disciplines where knowledge changes more rapidly) at the time a complete credit application is submitted.

You can apply at any point in your program. However, we strongly recommend you apply as early into your studies as possible so that you have an up-to-date student plan.

Credit transfer applications submitted within two weeks of census date may result in academic and financial penalty if credit is granted for a subject enrolled in that semester. In this instance, you will be contacted to discuss your options.

Please use our Enquiry and Application portal to submit a credit application.

Documentation

If you studied at a university other than Federation University, you must provide the following:

  • Official academic transcript, including a key to your grades
  • Official subject descriptors (PDF format) from the year you completed the subject detailing Synopsis, Subject objectives, Assessments, contact hours, placement hours and details (if applicable).  You can obtain these from your prior institution through their online handbook (ensuring they include the above details) or by contacting them directly.
  • Education students must also provide placement logbooks.

Documents must be in English, or a certificated copy of translation to English.

Credit for previous TAFE studies

If you are seeking credit for previous TAFE studies, you must provide:

  • Certificate of Completion (or a statement of completion on your transcript)

You should enrol as per your Program Structure until you receive your credit outcome.

Credit assessment may take up to 10 business days (this may be longer during the peak period of December-March).

If credit transfer is approved, you will receive a personalised student plan that shows your enrolment and progression, and a credit outcome letter. Your credit will be recorded on your academic transcript with a TC grade.

You can also view your credit in my Student Centre.

Students transferring between Federation University programs

If you're transferring between programs, your credit application will be assessed upon transfer/results release of the current semester.

Applications within two weeks of census date

Credit transfer applications submitted within two weeks of census date may result in academic and financial penalty if credit is granted for a subject enrolled in that semester. In this instance, you will be contacted to discuss your options

Appealing a credit transfer outcome

If you believe you have grounds to appeal, you may do so as per the Student Appeal Procedure.

You must submit your appeal within 30 days of being notified of the outcome. As this process can take several weeks, we recommend you stay enrolled in your course(s) and complete all coursework until you know the outcome of your appeal.

Credit for cross-institutional study

Cross-institutional study enables students to study subjects at another institution while still being enrolled with their main institution. If you’re enrolled with us, you will need to complete an application (see below) and we will assess whether you are eligible for credit for these studies.

You are eligible for cross-institutional study if you:

  1. Are an active Federation University student
  2. Have courses remaining to complete

Cross-institutional applications must be submitted by the start of the relevant semester.

  1. Complete page 1 of the Application for Cross Institutional Study (Outbound)
  2. Forward it to the Host Institution of where you wish to study. They need to complete and sign the Host Provider Details on page 2.
  3. Complete and upload the application to the Enquiry and Application Portal with the subject descriptor of the course you wish to study.
    • The subject descriptor must be for the year you will study the subject and detail the Synopsis, Subject objectives, Assessments, contact hours, placement hours and details (if applicable)

We will email you to let you know whether your application for cross-institutional study has been approved.

We will finalise your credit transfer once we receive confirmation that you have passed your course.  Once your results have been released, upload a copy of your official transcript to the Enquiry and Application Portal.

Credit for overseas study

As a Federation student, you can study on an exchange program for one or two semesters at one of our partner institutions, participate in a study tour, or undertake a short program during the summer or winter break.

You are eligible to receive credit for overseas study if you:

  • Have completed at least one year of full-time academic study at Federation University (or equivalent).
  • Have at least one course remaining upon your return.
  • Are in good academic standing - Grade Point Average (GPA) at least 4.0

If you're interested in studying overseas, we encourage you to start researching your options as early as possible.

You may apply after you've completed at least one year of full-time study at Federation University (or equivalent). Generally, we recommend  the second year of your program as the  ideal time to study abroad and to avoid the final semester of your degree.

For information on overseas study options and how to apply, visit Study Abroad.

Other considerations

You should consider the following when applying for credit.

International students should be aware that the granting of credit could affect your duration of studies. The university is obliged to notify Immigration if the duration of your studies is reduced due to the granting of credits.

Students need to check with accreditation bodies such as CPA and ACS that your accreditation is not put at risk by the granting of credit.

Credit may be rescinded due to legitimate academic reasons, including:

  • You wish to undertake further study as part of your program
  • You wish to complete a double-credit point course and do not have enough credit points available e.g., you wish to complete a 30-credit point WIL placement course, but you only have 15 credit points available
  • There are visa implications, and you must undertake further study
  • Program changes have been implemented by the Institute and credit must be rescinded to ensure you complete the requirements of the degree

Requests to rescind credit should be as early as possible to allow time for review, approval, and adjustments to study planning.

Requests to rescind credit will not be granted after the commencement of your last semester of study.

To rescind credit, you will need to contact us in writing via the Enquiry and Application Portal, stating which credit you wish to rescind and the reason why.
