Fiji - Mental health capacity building in a diverse regional setting (Fiji) with Australian undergraduate nursing students.

Students enrolled in Federation University Mental Health Nursing will focus their work at St Giles Psychiatric Hospital - a small psychiatric hospital and community mental health service in Suva, Fiji. Students will also participate in Drug and Alcohol awareness Units and Mental health support services in Fiji. This placement will present students with a unique opportunity for knowledge exchange and understanding of vulnerability, illness, stigma, isolation, social acceptance and social justice including the observation of a currently developing mental health care system impacted by under-funding and diverse social constraints.
The benefits will enhance students’ personal capacity for being social and cultural agents of acceptance and change along with an understanding of varied mental health treatments in the Indo-Pacific region.
