New Colombo Plan (NCP) study tours

The New Colombo Plan is a signature initiative of the Australian Government which aims to lift knowledge of the Indo Pacific in Australia by supporting Australian undergraduates to study and undertake internships in the region.

The New Colombo Plan Mobility Program provides funding to Australian universities and consortia to support Australian undergraduate students to participate in semester-based or short-term study, internships, mentorships, practicums and research in 40 host locations across the Indo-Pacific region.

The following programs are currently available as Short term programs in 2023 / early 2024.

2023 Public Health Nursing Study tour of Indonesia

Tour leader - Professor Aziz Rahman

This project aims to provide undergraduate Nursing students an opportunity to experience health promotion activities delivered in developing countries. The experience will prioritise investigating factors influencing health and wellbeing in the resource-constraint settings of Indonesia. This will assist them in understanding the concept of public health at individual and community levels not only in terms of healthcare settings, but also health seeking behavior, social determinants, distribution of risk factors and cultural context.

Federation University will work in conjunction with the  host organization, Universitas Airlangga, Surabaya, Indonesia. A workshop will be conducted where Australian students will interact with students and faculty members from Universitas Airlangga to have a better understanding of cultural contexts of healthcare in Indonesia and they will also be able to share their experiences of Australian healthcare. A special visit will be arranged for Australian students to interact with the Mayor of Surabaya, who has taken a number of public health initiatives to improve health and wellbeing of community people there and has been awarded nationally and internationally. Students will also get an opportunity to visit local tourist spots, smart city examples and cultural heritage.

2023 NCP South Korea - Semester Long Study - All Institutes

Participate in a semester long exchange with Pukyong National University (PKNU). You will study 4 courses at PKNU that match courses within your program or take the place of electives. You would remain enrolled with Federation University and as a domestic undergraduate student, your fees would continue to be paid as per your studies within Australia – deferred to a HECS-Help loan or paid up-front. Any study support you are eligible for via Centrelink will continue to be applicable. Plus you will receive funding of AUD$7,000 which you can use towards your flights and accommodation while overseas.

With close alignment in certain discipline areas, particular areas of interest sit with the PKNU College of Humanities and Social Sciences; College of Natural Science; College of Fisheries Sciences and College of Business Administration. Respective Federation University equivalence would be found with our Bachelor of Visual Arts; Bachelor of Environmental and Conservation Science; Bachelor of Sustainable Food Systems and our Bachelor of Applied Management and Business degrees. It is anticipated that an NCP mobility opportunity be provided for students in these discpline areas, but expressions of interest are invited from all interested students across all discipline areas.

A 10-week Korean Language program with Semester long exchange has been incorporated into our Exchange Agreement that will enable Australian students to develop conversational Korean capability.

2023 NCP Singapore Study Tour - Design for Change - Health for All - (Nursing)

This exciting study tour is themed Inspired by Singapore: Design for Change (Health for All). It is a joint University of Canberra (UC), Monash University and Federation University project, and will also include Queensland University of Technology. It builds on very successful study tours to Singapore in 2017, 2018 and 2019, which emerged from the experience of taking study tours to Singapore and China focusing on design and healthy ageing.

You will tour key cultural sites, health services and communities in Singapore and then work in multicultural teams with Australian and Singaporean students studying Design, Media, Film and Nursing in Singapore to create new concepts that will promote and support health and wellbeing in our ageing populations. We will be working in Singapore with Nanyang Polytechnic nursing and design students in collaboration with the School of X and Singapore Design Council.

You will also receive an introduction to the amazing multi-cultural influences of Singapore and an understanding of design thinking and its application in the health context.

In collaborative site visits you will engage directly with the community and will be able to meet citizens, service providers and service users. You will learn about how to create innovative apps, physical spaces and interfaces, as well as services and urban and community- led design campaigns that can lead to real change in policy and in practice.

As a collaborative project, you will be able to meet students in graphic, industrial, and interactive design, and media studies from the Australian partner Universities and Nanyang Polytechnic, the School of X and Singapore Design Council, increasing your network of friends and professional connections.

2023/4 Nepal Life Science Study Tour (Conservation & Environmental Science)

This three-week short course program for Federation students will be primarily located at the National Trust for Nature Conservation’s (NTNC’s) Biodiversity Conservation Centre (BCC) in Sauhara, adjacent to Chitwan National Park and within Nepal’s Terai (lowland) area – rich in biodiversity and wildlife. You will learn about Nepalese culture and rural society, and will observe and participate in community-based conservation programs targeted to the conservation of iconic wildlife species such as one-horned rhinoceros, elephant, pangolin, Bengal tiger, leopard, and smaller jungle cat species such as fishing cat, while developing hands-on skills in wildlife / habitat monitoring.

The course will examine Nepal’s community-based conservation model and the tensions between Nepal’s international conservation obligations and the costs and benefits of wildlife conservation experienced by local people. You will directly observe the positive and negative effects of international conservation policies on local people and the importance of managing these effects.

2023 NCP Nepal Life Science Internship (Vet Science)

Grab this opportunity to participate in community-based programs targeted to the conservation and health of iconic wildlife species such as the one-horned rhinoceros, pangolin, Bengal tiger, leopard, and smaller jungle cat species such as fishing cat,  and to explore the role of the animal health practitioner in Nepal’s community-based conservation model.

In the initial three weeks , you will be primarily located at the National Trust for Nature Conservation’s (NTNC’s) Biodiversity Conservation Centre (BCC) in Sauhara, adjacent to Chitwan National Park and within Nepal’s Terai (lowland) area – rich in biodiversity and wildlife. You will learn about Nepalese culture and rural society, whilst being introduced to key aspects of Nepal’s community-based approach to conservation as a contrast to government-led initiatives in the West. An important part of this course will be an introduction to the Nepalese Community Forestry system, its history and its contribution to conservation.

In the second three weeks, you will work alongside veterinary and animal care staff at the Biodiversity Conservation Centre, taking part appropriately in tasks associated with managing the health of domestic animals (a service provided to local people) and of wildlife. The latter may include participation in care and treatment of injured and orphaned wildlife, laboratory testing for diseases, wildlife rescue and rehabilitation operations. This work is conducted in the context of Nepal’s community-based conservation model which interns will also study. Numbers are limited to 6 students per year due to the logistics of supporting and supervising internship students in a remote location in a developing country.

2023 Nepal Clinical Placement (Nursing)

Tour Leade: Associate Professor Karen Missen, Director, Teaching and Learning

Enrolled in your final year of Nursing?  Apply to participate in a Healthcare Clinical placement in Nepal, exploring the provision of healthcare within a global perspective. You will focus your placement work at Scheer Memorial Hospital, a small, private community hospital in Banepa, central Nepal. This hospital has 150 beds and covers a diverse range of specialties including dermatology, med-surg, obstetrics and perinatal, paediatrics, general and paediatric intensive care and emergency.   The hospital also provides essential outreach services to the local community.

You will get the opportunity to interact with healthcare workers, patients and community members in acute and primary healthcare settings in Banepa, Nepal. This placement presents students with a unique opportunity for knowledge exchange and the observation of a healthcare system in a developing country that is completely diverse to Australia. The benefits will include the opportunity to understand an array of different cultural and community perspectives on health and enhanced interest in global issues.

Tour Leader - Associate Professor Abdel Halabi

This program uses a learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience. You will get to intimately understand the workings of organisations and institutions, and their business models, and also their relationships with civil society, service providers, suppliers, the communities they serve and work with, and even their own staff.

The aim is to explore the prevalent socio-cultural issues of the region through the lenses of business and enterprise. You will participate in the Beyond Borders Learning Program titled: Social Business & Enterprise. You will meet government institutions supporting medium and small-scale industry as well as a host of NGO’s in different sectors of the industry either engaging in social business or creating livelihood opportunities for others.

You will gain valuable insights about the work of these local organisations, be able to challenge yourself to understand and interpret the cultural nuances and find means to function in new ways that you did not have access to before.

Tour leader - Dr. Grant Meredith, Lecturer, Multimedia and Computer Games

Experience different Chinese cultures both in a large metropolitan city and a rural university, and develop international networks that will foster future partnerships and career opportunities.

The project sends a class of our Bachelor of Information Technology students to Shaoguan University (SGU), Guangdong Province and Hebei University of Science and Technology (HeBUST), Shijiazhuang, Hubei province, China, to learn alongside Chinese students from our partnered universities in a shared classroom.

You  will initially travel from Guangzhou to live within the SGU campus and be firmly embedded within day-to-day student life. You will be studying in block- mode with SGU students for two weeks as part of a partnership agreement. You will then travel to HeBUST in Hebei, to continue to observe and participate within Federation’s partnered information technology school. You will experience two uniquely placed Chinese universities within two distinctly different Chinese provinces.

You will also be engaged in cultural classes including Chinese etiquette, Mandarin/Cantonese language, Kung Fu, local tours and a range of other experiences. You will also conduct English language classes for the Chinese students and teach about Australian culture, educational opportunities, and travel hints.
