Indigenous Knowledges and Research: Library tools

Posted: Sunday 2 June 2024

Federation library has adopted the Indigenous Referencing Guidance for Indigenous Knowledges, which was developed by the  Indigenous Archives Collective . This referencing guide and toolkit was featured in a presentation by Dr Kirsten Thorpe at the National Centre for Reconciliation Truth and Justice’s ‘In Search of Indigenous Knowledges’ Symposium. This Guide includes a decision tree to support critical evaluation of the suitability of resources in addition to guidance on how to respectfully acknowledge Indigenous Knowledges. The library’s FedCite referencing tool also includes information and examples to guide users in adopting culturally appropriate referencing practices.

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Research content on the Research guide  has been created by the library with input from the National Centre for Reconciliation Truth and Justice.  The content is designed to support Federation researchers, and HDR candidates, undertaking projects that involve Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Knowledge, Peoples or Communities, to embed ethically and culturally safe practices at all stages of the research journey.
