In its long history, the University has been home to many passionate 'Eurekaphiles'. As a result, the Federation University Cultural Collections holds many interesting historical examples of ephemera relating to the Eureka Stockade, documenting how it was commemorated over the past 170 years. Items include newspaper articles from 1923 to the present day, photographs of the replica Eureka Stockade and the Eureka 'Sail' in Ballarat East’s Eureka Memorial Gardens, commemorative menus and placemats, and a program from the 100th anniversary celebrations. While the style and meanings of commemoration change over time the core tenets of democracy, political representation and comradery continue to hold relevance and ignite passions today.
