Our Vocational Education and Training (VET) in Schools (VETiS) program offers a broad suite of VET qualifications specifically packaged for students undertaking a senior secondary school qualification such as Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) or Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning program (VCAL). VET programs are designed to provide a more vocational VCE or VCAL experience and expand opportunities for senior secondary students, to link students to industry and training providers, to help meet the needs of industry and to prepare young people for the workplace of the future. VCE VET programs are fully-recognised within the units 1-4 structure of the VCE and can contribute towards satisfactory completion of the VCE or VCAL certificate. Importantly, VETiS allows students to explore career options and pathways.
All training qualifications are derived from the Australian Qualifications Framework, reflect specific industry competency standards, and are either delivered or auspiced by us.
The VETiS suite of programs are delivered in a simulated industry environment and taught by industry experienced practitioners who are qualified in both training delivery and their field of expertise. While all programs are customised for secondary school aged students, the curriculum is drawn directly from the certificate program on which it is based. This enables students to complement their school based studies with industry relevant training while gaining a head start on tertiary and employment opportunities.

Australian School-based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SBAT)
SBATs were introduced in 1998 as a distinct pathway within Vocational Education and Training in Schools (VETiS). They are available to secondary school students over 15 years old who are enrolled in the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) or the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL).
'School-based apprenticeships' is a term used to describe all part-time apprenticeships and traineeships. The same conditions apply as a full-time apprenticeship but students usually complete Certificate II or III part-time over a two year period. Students usually spend three days at school completing their VEC or VCAL and two days in paid employment and training. Australian school-based apprenticeships are available with FedUni in the following areas:
- Building and construction (carpentry)
- Electrotechnology (electrician)
- Painting and decorating
- Engineering - fabrication (heavy and light)
- Retail baking (bread) or (cake and pastry)
- Hospitality - commercial cookery
- Information technology
Like other VETiS offerings the vocational training components of SBATs also contribute credit towards a senior secondary certificate. Many school-based apprentices and trainees move on to a full-time contract with their employer after leaving school, while others choose to continue their education and training at a Registered Training Organisation or university.
Australian school-based apprenticeships enable you to gain a national vocational qualification while continuing school studies. They have a number of features including:
- Attendance at school and work
- A training agreement which links to an industrial award or agreement, signed by the employer and you as an Apprentice
- Attainment of a senior secondary certificate and a vocational education and training (VET) qualification.
- You earn a wage for the time spent in productive work.
