Matt Hinkley’s practice takes drawing as its initial impetus – this formative mark-making is then extrapolated to sculptural form, moving from 2D to 3D through casting, engraving, embossing or other sculptural methods. The result is an experiment in the limits of the material and legibility – delicate forms are created that push the structural integrity of the material while adorned with minuscule impressions that test the limits of visibility.

Hinkley’s sculptures are always minuscule, pertaining to a history of the body and its navigation around sculpture. He explores the potential to be found in an art deeply embedded in modest materials which, rather than assaulting the viewer, awaits patient engagement.
