Areas of expertise

Luiza’s overarching research and teaching focus is on teachers’ professional development and collaborative practices in education. Over the past ten years, Luiza has focused on understanding the challenges teachers face in their professional development in different contexts. Specifically, Luiza’s line of research explores teachers’ professional development, using learning communities as a collaborative strategy to change/negotiate their micro-context. Luiza has been employing action research as a way of filling the gap between theory and practice in the professional development area. Since becoming a university lecturer, Luiza’s teaching expertise relies on pedagogy and socio-cultural areas, specifically, subjects that argue for school-based health and physical education, specifically those focused on curriculum, pedagogy and methods of health and physical education, and history and philosophy of health and physical education.

Luiza’s work with professional development and collaborative practices can be organised into different categories:

  • School-university partnerships as a collaborative endeavour in Health and Physical Education. It involves pre-service teachers, teacher educators, teachers, and their communities working together to learn/improve the profession and school realities.
  • Democratic practices in higher education. It addresses not only classroom projects and practices but also teacher educators learning through local and international partnerships.
  • Learning communities as a strategy for teachers’ professional development. It focuses on supporting teachers from disadvantaged places in their learning and toward micro-social change.

Research interests

  • Democratic practices in higher education
  • School-university partnerships
  • Learning communities and teachers’ professional development
  • Internationalisation of research
