Naomi Nelson is a Lecturer and Literacy Coordinator at Federation University Australia’s Mount Helen campus. She teaches into initial teacher education programs, supporting pre-service teachers to develop strong pedagogical content knowledge in literacy. Her expertise includes the teaching and learning of reading and writing, literacy leadership, numeracy instruction, and the use of coaching to build professional capacity in schools. Naomi’s current research focuses on the impact of reading medium—paper versus screen—on comprehension, with a particular interest in implications for high-stakes literacy assessment.
With over 18 years of experience in education, Naomi began her career as a primary teacher and has held a range of specialist roles in literacy, including Literacy Coach for the Grampians Regional Office, Literacy Leader at a Melbourne primary school, and Literacy Consultant with the Catholic Education Office Melbourne.
Naomi is currently undertaking a Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Tasmania, investigating how digital and print formats influence reading comprehension among pre-service teachers.
