Our history

The University has a distinguished history as one of Australia’s oldest higher education institutions. We have a strong tradition of education and training delivery and celebrated our 150 year tradition in 2020. We became Federation University Australia in January 2014 and continue to support our thriving community of over 18,500 students and 123,000 alumni across Australia and the world.

Supporting our students to achieve success in their studies and in life is something we are proud of. Not only is Federation University ranked the 175th best young university in the world as rated by Times Higher Education, but we’re also highly ranked in Australia too. We’re number one in Victoria for starting salary (undergraduate) and number two in Victoria for starting salary (postgraduate)*! Plus, the Good Universities Guide 2024 has rated us number one in Australia for first-generation student enrolments for the sixth year in a row. We're also number one in Victoria for social equity and are highly ranked across the state for teaching quality, student support and student-teacher ratio*.

Our Victorian campuses in Ballarat, Berwick and Gippsland provide a natural environment to undertake your study. Pleasant climate

Summers in Victoria are warm to hot during the day, but usually cool down at night. The average daytime temperature in summer ranges around the mid 20 degrees Celsius but may reach 35 degrees Celsius or higher. Spring and Autumn are usually mild and pleasant. Winter is cold and often wet. It may snow lightly once or twice a year. Daytime temperatures in Winter may be between 10 and 15 degrees Celsius, while at night the temperature may be as low as zero degrees Celsius.

Quality, low cost living

The cost of living in Ballarat and Gippsland is much lower than in larger capital cities. Students will enjoy more affordable accommodation, living and entertainment costs in a quality environment that is ideal for studying, learning and experiencing life in Australia. A wide range of accommodation options and support is provided to students looking to relocate to Ballarat or the Gippsland areas.

You can apply direct via StudyLink or find an authorised agent to assist with your application. After you’ve checked the entry requirements on Course Finder, you can commence your application. We require copies of your academic transcripts, English test results and a statement of purpose too. We’ll then conduct an assessment and let you know the outcome.
