Researchers at the Internet Commerce Security Laboratory (ICSL) at the University of Ballarat encourage people to become aware of the threats posed online, such as malware and identity theft.

Practising safe security measures can help protect against these threats.

"The internet is a great enabler of business, education and socialising – but it always pays to be aware of threats and how you can stay one step ahead of criminals," Associate Professor Paul Watters, ICSL Research Director, said.

"Some easy security measures include applying security updates and having different passwords for different systems. Users should also be wary of software downloaded from the internet from untrusted sources."

A more recent threat is that of the exposure of private details online, such as your phone number and home address on Facebook and Twitter.

This type of information is added to by users, but can also be 'accidentally' uploaded with location tracking, such as adding your location to a posting.

Protecting against these threats can be as simple as turning these services off, or removing public permission to view your profile.

"The ICSL has been operating in Ballarat since 2008, and in that time the threats to users have increased," Associate Professor Watters said.

"We work with IBM, Westpac and the Australian Federal Police collaboratively to develop insights into the nature of these threats and how they can be combated."

Next week is National Cyber Security Awareness week, from 12 to 15 June.

It is held by the Federal Government in partnership with industry, community and consumer groups.
