Want to audition for our performance programs? Here's how.

Audition application

Whether you are an aspiring actor or music theatre aficionado; a school leaver or mature-age applicant; or a local, interstate or international applicant, applying to the Bachelor of Performing Arts is a process that has two parts.

Applying: Key dates for 2024

Application Dates

  • Applications open: August 2023
  • VTAC applications:VTAC applications are closed. Direct applications for VTAC students open on February 20th, 2024
  • Direct applications: Due February 23rd, 2024
  • Video recorded audition for all timely applicants should be submitted by: Tuesday October 31st, 2023
  • Late Applications including video: Due January 22nd, 2024

  • We have a two-part application process. Ensure you complete both parts to be eligible for audition, whether you are a school-leaver or a direct applicant. Please read the Application process section below and download our guide to applying.

Auditions

Auditions for applications are as follows:

Online: All first round auditions will be digital. All applicants are required to create and submit a video submission no later than Monday January 22nd, 2024

  • Remember to submit your Audition Application - once we receive this, we will send you log in details for the Submission Portal.

Call-backs: If your first round audition is successful, you will be invited to a ‘face-to-face’ call-back audition at the Ballarat campus on December 4th, 5th or 6th, 2023.

Selection notification

  • Audition outcome: VTAC applicants will receive an A, B or C letter by mail in December.
  • Final selections and offers are made through VTAC from late December to mid-February.
  • All direct applicants will be notified of audition outcome by the University

There is a two-part application process for the program. Please ensure you complete both parts to be eligible for audition, whether you are a school-leaver or a direct applicant.

School leavers

This includes interstate school-leavers.

Part One: Apply for the program through VTAC by the VTAC closing date
Part Two: Complete and submit the Audition application form on this page. Once we receive your Audition Application, we will send you log in details for the Video Submission Portal.

All other applicants

Part One: Apply for the program directly with Federation University

Step 1

  • Each candidate is required to choose, download and perform one classical monologue from the lists provided. Note: Monologues will be available from May 30th, 2023 at our Monologue site.
  • Each candidate will perform one piece as a contrast; AND

either

  • Prepare one song. This song should be from a musical. Please note: Songs from musicals that were created featuring popular recording artists (e.g. ABBA, Queen, Dusty Springfield) are not suitable for auditions.

or

  • Choose and download one contemporary monologue from the lists provided. Note: Monologues will be available from May 30th, 2023 at our Monologue site.

Step 2

Prepare your monologue and/or song selections for audition.

Monologue instructions

Select pieces from the official list. Note: Monologues will be available from May 30th, 2023 at our Monologue site.

We recommend that you read the play/s from which your chosen monologue/s are taken as it will enrich your presentation of it.

The monologue(s) must be memorised for the audition. Please ensure you learn the monologue(s) properly.

  • There will be no prompting at the audition.
  • Accents, costumes or props are not required.
  • We recommend that you read the play your monologue has been selected from. This will help in your detailed preparation of the piece. Publication details are included as part of the monologue.

Song instructions

Applicants may choose a song to perform. Selection requirements apply to your selection:

Choose songs from musicals*

*Songs from musicals that were created featuring popular recording artists (e.g. ABBA, Queen, Dusty Springfield) are not suitable for auditions.

Your song must be memorised and performed with piano accompaniment.

For the first round video audition, backing tracks are permitted but should be piano tracks only (not full band or orchestral). Having a live accompanist play for your video audition is permitted, but they should not be seen on screen.

If asked to attend a call-back audition in person, please bring your backing track AND the sheet music of your song marked with any cuts or revisions. An accompanist will be provided at the call-back auditions. You cannot bring your own accompanist to your call-back audition.

The song should not exceed two minutes.

Please note: applicants may be asked to undertake a short interview after the audition. If required, we will contact you to arrange this.

Step 3

Create a short video of yourself performing your monologue and/or song choices.

Note: The footage can be simply created using a smartphone, iPad or personal camera. The video production quality does not have to be of a professional standard - keep it simple.

Step 4

Upload your video to our Audition portal by the closing date.

Step 5

Workshop Callbacks: if you are successful in your first round audition, you will be invited to a workshop call back in early December.

Audition feedback

Due to the large number of applicants we see, we regret that we are not able to give feedback about your individual application. There is a far greater number of applicants than we have places available, so many high-quality applicants are disappointed each year.

What to wear

What to Wear

Being well-groomed gives us the impression that you care about your craft.

Wear neat, casual attire, with no jeans, belts or jewellery. Costumes or props are not required for your audition.

Dance Call back

Wear clothes you can comfortably move in – no jeans, belts or jewellery. Footwear – dance (jazz or ballet) shoes if you have some, runners or trainers suitable for part of the dance call.

Distance applicants

All first round auditions will be via a video application process.

All applicants are required to submit their video online. 

You may be required to attend the workshop callback in person at the Camp St Campus, Ballarat

International students

International Students

International students should access the international website in the first instance.

Applicants should follow the same procedure as distance applicants.
