Come view the sweeping panorama of four new works by the wonderful graduating third year students. Their brief – to create an ensemble work from their imaginations asking: ‘Why does the world need to see our piece now?’ An over-arching theme emerged of ‘looking deeply’. This, in turn, gave rise to the banner-title of PANOPTIKON.
Derived from ancient Greek, panopticon means ‘all seeing’.
The term has been used to describe innovative phenomena such as a central surveillance tower in an 18th century circular prison allowing guards to observe prisoners without them knowing.
Today, invisible monitoring has escalated exponentially through multiple forms of surveillance - mechanisms for power and control.
This festival of four short works draws upon song, dance, live music, and heightened text to contribute to the creative realisation of these rich and probing pieces.
Plug in and switch on to new contemporary works and find the pulse of the moment.
