Mrs Rich is very rich but longs for a title. Sir John Roverhead has a title but longs to be rich.
Sounds like a match made in 18th century aristocratic heaven, but with a slew of admirers and competitors all jostling each other for an ever-higher rung on the social ladder, someone is certain to fall.
In this sharp, riotous satire, Mary Pix - an almost forgotten female playwright of the Restoration – lays bare a world rife with deception and duplicity, astutely critiquing the absurdity of social aspiration.
