The Spirit Level is an opera in one act, with music by Richard Chew and libretto by Rufus Norris, current Artistic Director of the National Theatre in London.

When William Banks discovers that his wife Agatha is taking part in covert Spiritualist meetings led by the mysterious medium Xanthe, he is outraged and resolves to have her committed to an asylum, under the malevolent governance of Reverend Joshua Grippe. Dark secrets emerge as Agatha begins to lose her mind and what began as harmless fun turns inexorably to tragedy.
