Creating a Moodle Book
- Click Add an Activity or Resource in the topic or week that you wish to add to and choose Book.
- Enter the title of the Book in the Name field. The rest of the settings can be left as the default.
- Click Save and Display. The Add a new chapter window appears.
- In the Chapter title enter the name of the page/section.
- In the Content area add the page content. Once a page has been created The Table of Contents appears in the left-hand column. From here you can edit pages and add new pages.
- To add a new page, click the + icon.

Adding content/Editing a book
Once you have created a book with one or multiple chapters you will be able to edit them through the table of contents.
Firstly ensure you have Turned editing on from your main Moodle page.
Then go into the book you have created. It will like the image below but with your heading.
In the table of contents next to the chapter headings you will see below there are symbols.

The arrows allow for the chapter to be moved up or down in the order of chapters if you wish
to move it.

The cog symbol is for editing. This is where you click to add or edit content, images, and links
in to your book.

The delete symbol is what you click on to delete the book or chapter if you no longer want it.

The eye symbol has the same use in a book as it does in the rest of Moodle which is to make visible or hide something.

In this case if you are not ready for students to view the book yet then‘hide’ it so that you can work on it until you are happy to make it ‘visible’.

The plus symbol is what you click on if you wish to add additional chapters or sub chapters to your book.

Navigate your book
In addition to the links in the table of contents, you may move through the book using the directional arrows
located to the top-left and bottom-left of the content.
Importing chapters
- To import chapters create a zip file of HTML files and optional multimedia files and folders. If you wish to upload sub chapters,
add "_sub" to the end of HTML file or folder names. - Go to the Administration Block > Book administration > Import chapter
- Choose whether each HTML file or folder represents one chapter
- Browse for and select the zip file, either using the Add button or the drag and drop method:

Note: Relative file links are converted to absolute chapter links. Images, Flash and Java are
re-linked too. Remember to upload images and multimedia files as well as HTML files.
Printing a book
Whole books and individual chapters may be printed by selecting the relevant link in the book and by clicking the single grey gear in the top right of the page.
Administration > Book administration > Permissions. Depending on your level of access you may not have this option.
Speak to your Moodle administrator if you don’t have access to the permissions and would like to.
Note: Accordion content will be automatically expanded and included in what is printed.
