Short biography

Dr Dengsheng Zhang received a BSc and a BA in 1985 and 1987 respectively. He obtained his PhD in Computing in 2002 from Monash University, Australia, and worked as a lecturer/senior lecturer for the Faculty of Information Technology of Monash University for more than 12 years until 2014. He is currently a senior lecturer in the Faculty of Science and Technology at Federation University Australia.

Dr Zhang has over 20 years of research experience in the field of artificial intelligence and big data. His main research interests include pattern recognition, machine learning, big multimedia data classification and retrieval. He has published nearly 90 refereed papers on international journals and conference proceedings in his career. His publications have so far attracted more than 8,800 citations according to Google Scholar, and his h-index is 30 (each of his 30 top cited papers has been cited at least 30 times). One of his papers published in Pattern Recognition in 2007 has been awarded the Best Journal Article by the International Association of Pattern Recognition (IAPR). His paper on DICTA2010 was also awarded the Best Colour Paper Prize by IAPR.

Dr Zhang has jointly received $520,000 funding from an Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery Project Grant to support his research on image and music data classification. He has supervised 6 PhDs and two masters to completion. He has won the 2009 Faculty of Information Technology Early Career Researcher Award for his outstanding research achievement.

Dr Zhang is on the reviewer board of a number of top international journals including IEEE TPAMI, TOM, TIP, CSVT; ACM TOMCCAP, TMIS; and Pattern Recognition. He has also served on the program committees and organisation committees of 15 international conferences. Dr Zhang is a regular PM member for IEEE mainstream conferences of ICME, ICASSP and ICIP. Currently, he also serves as an associate editor of WSEAS (The World Scientific and Engineering Academy and Society) Transactions on Signal Processing.

Dr Zhang also has over 20 years international teaching experience and has lectured extensively on both undergraduate and postgraduate courses including calculus, business statistics, business programming, web design and development, multimedia development, computer systems, computer networks, eCommerce, computer interface design and development, mobile agent, business systems, general operations, computer models for business decisions and project management.
