The world is undergoing significant changes in its weather and climate conditions. To understand the impact of these changes on environment and society, scientists are producing increasingly large amounts of data records through satellites, meteorological instruments and physical model simulations.
Despite the increasing availability of computational resources, current analytical tools have been out-paced by these ever-growing amounts of weather and climate data, therefore broadening the gap between "data" and "understanding". Addressing this gap has a significant mathematical dimension.
Climate Informatics Research Group (CIRG) targets developing end-user defined tools and decision support systems to understand climate changes and their impact on environment and society in Australia and the Asia-Pacific region. It also promotes collaboration between climate scientists, data scientists (machine learning, statistics and data mining researchers) and the end-user communities across multidisciplinary sectors in Australia and the Asia-Pacific region.
CIRG conducts research in three broad areas:
- Mathematical and Statistical Modelling – this includes environmental process modelling, weather and climate modelling, and disaster risk and impact modelling using information from satellite observations, instrumental records and physical model simulations.
- Climate Change Impacts and Threats – multidisciplinary research into the impact of climate change on building infrastructure, food and water security, ecological biodiversity, infectious disease transmission etc.
- Weather and Climate Extremes – such as tropical cyclones, severe rainfall, droughts and heat waves.
