18-22 Jul 2016. Approximation and Optimisation at MATRIX
The International Mathematical Research Institute MATRIX was established in 2015 to run research programs where world leading researchers in the mathematical sciences, as well as experts from business and industry, can come together to collaborate in an intellectually stimulating and supportive environment. This is a very important development nationally as the establishment of such an institute clearly demonstrates the government support to mathematics and research in general.
MATRIX started operations in June 2016 with one of its first programs being Approximation and Optimisation co-organised by the Centre for Informatics and Applied Optimisation (CIAO), RMIT University and Swinburne University of Technology. The two-part program consisted of an intensive research program at the Creswick campus of the University of Melbourne 10-16 July 2016 and the Mathematical Down Under workshop in Melbourne, 18-22 July 2016. The second event was also supported by the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute.
The Creswick program included a series of lectures by world leading experts Prof Nira Dyn (Tel Aviv University), Prof Constantin Zalinescu (University "AI.I. Cuza" Iasi), Prof Markus Hegland (Australian National University), Dr Julien Ugon, (CIAO, Federation University Australia) and Dr Nadezda Sukkhorukova (Swinburne University of Technology) and other intensive group research sessions. A number of CIAO researchers were involved in these sessions which have resulted in extended international research collaboration. There has been very positive feedback from the participants to both the research program and for the facilities at Creswick.
